farm history at Holmbush Farm
back to welcome >
Holmbush Farm World is part of a long-established country estate brimming with historic interest and timeless charms.

Once dragons were said to roam this land as it is part of the St. Leonards Forest and historically at the heart of numerous legends, including the fact that the last dragon in England was seen here!

The farm has been in the care of the same family since the mid-1800s and comprises a mixture of arable, livestock and forestry.  It is situated in the beautiful area of countryside designated as 'High Weald', which stretches from the western side of Sussex across to parts of Kent.

Still operated as a working farm, the farm opened its gates to the local community over 10 years ago. Its mission was to improve local understanding of farming and provide a place for safe, traditional outdoors fun and an educational resource for schools and playgroups. The dedicated and friendly staff at the farm welcome thousands of visitors a year.

In addition to running Holmbush Farm World, the Calverts continue to farm the surrounding arable land, run a flock of 150 ewes for lambing, and maintain a large area of forestry.  This farming ensures Farm World is completely self-sustaining with its animals fed off the land, its tearoom heated by home-grown firewood and traditional skills such as coppicing kept alive

Within the estate, and accessed via the Farm World entrance there are also a number of business units created from former farm buildings and now providing workspace for a variety of innovative businesses from Koi suppliers and graphic designers to removals men.
